Scottsdale, Ariz.-Thomas Detry almost got the par-3 16th hole and shot a 7-under 64 in the second round to take a lead of two shots in the WM Phoenix Open on Friday.
Detry had eight birdies and a bogey to reach 12 under another day of perfect conditions at TPC Sawgrass. Michael Kim shot a bogey-free 63 to reach 10 under and was tied up with Alex Smalley, who shot 65.
Jordan Spieth placed himself in the mix with Eagles on nrs. 13 and 15 and shot 65 to reach 9 under his second tournament since the wrist operation outside the season. Three-time PGA Tour winner Tom Kim was also 9 after photographing 66.
Emiliano Grillo makes hole-in-one on TPC Scottsdale’s notorious 16th and the crowd goes crazy
Grillo opened an AAS on the Par-3 16th Hole on Friday in the second round of the WM Phoenix.
Argentinian Emiliano Grillo brought the greatest roar and the only beer shower-from the day, which hit his tee shot on the noisy par-3 16th for an ace.
Tournament officials had tried to curb drinks by flying out of the stands in the stadium hole since Sam Ryder and Carlos Ortiz Bier showers left with Azen in the 2022. A double Belgian Olympian, Detry shot 66 in the first round in TPC Scottsdale and opened his second with three Birdies at the front nine in his bid on a first PGA Tour victory. His Birdie at No. 9 kicked a point of three straight ahead and he added three more to 2 feet on 16 round a bogey on the 490-Yard par-4 14th.
Spieth was 69th on Pebble Beach last week and scribbled from a few heavy places to shoot 68 in the opening round in the desert. He succeeded in a bird at the front nine in the second round, but sank eagle putts of 5 and 11 feet on TPC Scottsdale’s two rear-nine par-5s.
Spieth added a birdie to no. 17 after he had hit exactly to the right of the short par 4.
Smalley came from a missed cut at Torrey Pines, opened with a 67 and succeeded it with four birdies in a five-hole stretch starting at number 2 in the second round. The 28-year-old American rolled up in a 6-foot Eagle Putt The Par-5 13th and Birdied the difficult par-4 11th, but Bogey Bogeyed the Par-5 15th when he hit his second shot in the water.
Kim, winner of the John Deere Classic 2018, missed the cut in two of his three tournament to start the season, but had his match in TPC Scotttsdale tie. After opening with a 69, he stormed the rankings by closing with four straight birdies to shoot a 6-under 30 on the rear nine.
